Little Acorns – 16 months -24 months
As your child transitions into the Little Acorns group and continues their journey through the nursery, they will experience a sense of consistency and comfort, particularly in the daily structure. One of the key elements that remain familiar is the use of Structured Storytime, which is carefully designed to introduce important vocabulary and themes in a meaningful context. This structured time not only serves as a way to build language and comprehension skills but also provides a foundation for further learning. After the story, children are given the opportunity to reinforce their understanding through both self-directed play and adult-led activities, allowing them to explore the concepts at their own pace while still receiving guidance and support.
In the Little Acorns room, we place a strong emphasis on fostering curiosity and developing concentration skills, both of which are vital for learning. To help with this, we introduce a daily activity known as ‘Bucket Time,’ where the children are encouraged to explore various materials and activities that stimulate their minds and help them focus for extended periods. This practice strengthens their ability to engage meaningfully during Storytime and other structured activities throughout the day.

Additionally, we incorporate another important element into the daily routine – ‘Squiggle Whilst you Wiggle time.’ During this activity, the children engage in gross motor exercises and large movements, which are designed to enhance their physical coordination. These activities play a significant role in developing the fine muscle control that children need to eventually master writing skills. By combining fun physical activity with developmental milestones, we ensure that children are not only having fun but also building essential skills for their future.
The Little Acorns are also fortunate to have access to a special messy room and dining area. This dedicated space is used for a variety of activities that involve sensory exploration and creative play, which often require an easy-to-clean environment. The room is thoughtfully designed with an imaginative play frame, a quiet area, and plenty of interactive play options. This encourages the more mobile children to engage with their surroundings, stretch their legs, and explore new experiences that stimulate both their bodies and minds. It’s a space where creativity can flourish, and children are free to express themselves in a safe, structured environment.
Furthermore, the Little Acorns group is able to take full advantage of our two outdoor garden areas. These spaces are not just for physical play but are also carefully planned to offer a range of activities that allow children to explore nature, engage with outdoor resources, and further develop their physical and social skills. Whether it’s digging in the garden, playing with outdoor toys, or simply enjoying the fresh air, the outdoor areas provide endless opportunities for fun and learning.
Finally, as part of our commitment to supporting your child’s development and preparing them for their next steps, we begin to encourage independence in Little Acorns. This is done with the aim of ensuring they are ready for the next stage of their nursery journey in the Saplings room. Whether it’s making simple choices or taking on small responsibilities, these early experiences help foster confidence and self-reliance, paving the way for a smooth transition as they grow and develop.
The Little Acorns experience is carefully designed to provide a balance of structure, exploration, and growth. With consistent routines, stimulating activities, and opportunities for both independent and guided play, your child will be well-equipped to thrive in the nursery and beyond.
